An office formerly belonging to the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) was found to contain abandoned records, exposing social security numbers, driver license numbers, and other sensitive data. The records have been in the building for at least two years and it was apparent to local investigators that the records had recently been ransacked, exposing both adults and children to identity theft. “There really is no excuse. This office obviously has been abandoned for a period of time,” said Rafael Goyaneche, head of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. “And whoever was responsible for evacuating this facility had an ethical obligation to remove this material with them when they left.”
Authorities at HANO have agreed to look into the matter further and provide credit monitoring to those who may have been adversely impacted by the abandoned records.
